Technology
Murdoch Middle School views technology as a tool that is used to assist students as they learn.
Key features of the Murdoch technology program:Reliable school network with Internet connectivity
Five student computers per classroom
A teaching media center with a 1:1 computer to student ratio with a projection Smartboard and a scanning station
Technology and content integration with real world applications
Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Office Professional
Network printers
Teacher laptops
In-Focus projectors
Extensive teacher training on the use of technology in the classroom
Technology Integration
Technology is always taught in conjunction with relevant content. Students learn technology skills as they master curriculum content. Teachers work closely with the Director of Technology to plan technology into the content. Teachers also receive extensive training so that they are prepared to teach students technology skills. Often the Director of Technology will team teach with classroom teachers in the Media Center.
The School Network
Each student has a unique user name and password that gives them access to the school network and network resources. Students are taught how to save their work to an individually assigned network folder. Students also use the network to access shared resources and to print to network laser printers. Students can access their individual folder from any computer within the school.
The Media Center
The Media Center is comprised of a 26-seat teaching computer lab, also providing print media and other resources. Teachers sign up for time in the media center to work with their students on specific content driven activities. Students learn the skills they will need in high school and beyond.
Classroom Computers
Each classroom is equipped with five student computers. Classroom computers are used by students during class to complete work. Students often begin projects in the media center and then complete them using classroom computers allowing greater flexibility to meet the needs of all students.
Curriculum Frameworks
Murdoch is currently using the recommended Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for Instructional Technology to guide our planning and instruction for technology in grades 5-8. These standards can be viewed at the following web site here.
